Soundscapes

What is a soundscape?

The composer R. Murray Schafer coined the term ‘soundscape’ to identify sounds that “describe a place, a sonic identity, a sonic memory, but always a sound that is pertinent to a place” (Wagstaff, G. 2000).

The soundscapes on our 24/7 Nature Radio recordings generally focus on the natural environment such as the sound of seawaves, streams and wildlife. However, we also include soundscapes where a person is interacting with nature such as walking on a beach or in a forest.
